Compliance Requirements for Residential Wire Balustrades


Wire balustrades in Australia must comply with the National Construction Code (NCC) and relevant Australian Standards. For residential applications the key requirements are:


Height Balustrades must be a minimum of 1000mm in height where the floor level is more than 1000mm above the surface below. On stairs, the minimum handrail height is 865mm to 1000mm measured from the nosing of the stair.


Wire Spacing Wire spacing must be designed so that a 125mm sphere cannot pass through any opening in the balustrade. This prevents young children from putting their head through the infill. In practice this means wire runs must be spaced no greater than 80mm apart when correctly tensioned.


Structural Strength The balustrade system must be capable of withstanding the loads specified in AS 1170.1, including horizontal loads applied to the top rail and infill. Post spacing, wire gauge, and tensioning hardware must all be specified to meet these requirements.
